To me, traveling opens a part of the mind that has been closed off; it changes our perspective, changes how we live, and changes what we want out of life. Visiting the beautiful wonders of the world, learning about the different cultures that exist, and realizing that the world is so much larger than you’ve ever imagined are all components that make traveling so worthwhile. The lessons I’ve learned along the way have become some of the most important ones in life thus far.
Appreciate What You Have…
Traveling for a while always makes me miss home. Having been to a third world country for a whole month, and really seeing all the poverty first hand made me appreciate what I have grown up with. Seeing how these people’s main concern is where dinner will be coming from for the night rather than the small “problems” I worry about day-to-day, gives me a clear appreciation for all that I have been given and granted in life.
…But Don’t Be Afraid To Find What Else Is Out There
Traveling can be exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Walking away from that small town to discover the world can be very challenging. But, the best time to travel is when you’re young and full of adventurous spirit. You never want to look back on your life and have regrets on not taking opportunities while you had them. Explore, discover, pursue; let your mind create new visions and memories that you will keep forever.
Traveling requires a lot of meeting new people. Showing respect to the people you meet will only help you become more educated about their culture and way of life. You can learn more from the people you meet abroad than you can learn in a university setting. Respect their culture and what they have to say and your traveling experience will become so much more worthwhile.
Take A Moment And Look Up
It seems now with our world so enthralled in social media and staying connected, we barely have time to take in the beauty that surrounds us each day. Traveling is an opportunity to put down that phone, laptop, tablet, whatever it may be and connect. Connect, not to some electronic device, but to the people around you as well as the physical world around you. While traveling, there will definitely be a moment where you take a step back and say to yourself “I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than this.”
Don’t Let Others Hold You Back
While we’re young, it seems like we tend to put other’s happiness before our own. We give up on some of the opportunities life presents us with because we are afraid to think independently. Traveling makes you realize that the only way you’re going to get the most out of life is if you live it for yourself, and not anybody else. Sometimes, the most amazing parts of life happen when no one else is around.
