It’s that time of the year again where all you can think about is laying on a beach with your ray bans on, a piña colada in one hand, flipping through the latest issue of Vogue with the other, while you stare out at the beautiful, turquoise ocean kissing the shore… Okay back to reality. After the holidays are over and all that New Year’s cheer has subsided, the only thing I can think of is hightailing it to Florida, maybe California, and giving myself a few days of R&R before I have to head back to school.
The problem with vacation is, while you’ve been spending all winter layering on the cocoa butter to hide your ashy skin and trying every possible remedy to keep your hair from drying out completely, your beauty routine while on vacation is a complete 180.
That being said, I put together a beauty routine that will get your skin ready for vacation and get you that amazing golden glow you’ve been desiring all winter.
Body scrub is seriously a life saver. I use it all the time, no matter the season, no matter where I am. Body scrub is a necessity before you hit the beach. Use it in the shower the night before you intend to have a beach day and cover every inch of your body. Use small circular motions while rubbing it onto the skin so that your skin cells get rejuvenated. The base of the scrub (salt or sugar) will slough off all the dead skin cells, and whatever oils are in the scrub will leave your skin smooth and super hydrated. My favorite body scrub is this one from Walmart. I love the coconut lime smell which always makes me feel like I’m on vacation – at least when I shower.
Tinted Moisturizer vs Foundation
Usually when I’m on vacation, I don’t see the need for foundation because the Vitamin D from the sun clears my skin right up. However, if I’m required to put makeup on, whether it be for a nice lunch, meeting up with friends, whatever the case I like to stick with tinted moisturizer versus a heavy foundation. I like the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer but when I want something a little more light, I like the Bare Minerals Prime Time tinted primer. The texture is very light on my face but it’s tinted which gives me the coverage I need. If you insist on using an actual foundation, stick with a powder foundation. It will keep your skin from getting greasy, which can happen in the hot weather. Bare minerals makes a powder foundation that is also SPF 20!
Finding the Perfect Sunscreen
Finding the perfect sunscreen is always a nightmare. I don’t like the spray ones because I don’t get enough coverage, but the lotion based sunscreens are always too greasy. Look no further! This Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer is a great moisturizer for your face that is SPF 47 and a non-greasy formula. It keeps your skin protected while saving it from becoming a grease trap. As for my body, I find that Neutrogena Healthy Defense works like a charm. It comes in SPF 30 and 50 and there is also one for sensitive skin.
What To Do About the Sunburn
So you spent the entire day out in the sun, not a care in the world, and fell asleep or were just having too much fun to worry about reapplying. If you have any hopes of keeping your skin from peeling, you need to act fast. Take a cold shower and drink LOTS of water, this will keep your skin hydrated. Use an oatmeal based lotion, I like this one from St. Ives, and body wash. The oatmeal helps skin retain it’s natural moisture. After the lotion, rub your body down with a cooling gel. I like this one from Sun Bum because it has Tea Tree Oil, but I also like this one from Banana Boat because it has lidocaine, which relieves itching and burning. Any time you feel the burning feeling come back, reapply. As for your face, you need to be gentle. Yes, apply the cooling gel sparingly, but you can’t apply the body lotion to your face. I like the Vitamin E Moisture Lotion from the Body Shop because the vitamin E helps protect the skin from further damage while helping to repair the damaged skin cells. The Body Shop also makes a Vitamin E night cream.
Don’t Forget About the Lips!
I can’t tell you how many people neglect their lips when on vacation, only to end up with them burnt, peeling, and swollen. Make sure when going out in the sun you always have a lip balm that has SPF in it. I like Sun Bum SPF 30 Lip Balm because it comes in banana, mango, coconut, key lime, pomegranate, and grapefruit. I also like the Body Shop Vitamin E Lip Balm because it has the protecting Vitamin E.
While it’s always nice to get a natural tan out in the sunshine, the sun’s harmful rays can be extremely damaging on your skin. Self tanners are great to use when you want to avoid sunburn, but still want to look like you spent the whole day laying out. I love St. Tropez self tanners. They have lotions that give you a gradual tan over time as well as a wide variety of instant tan products that give you a gorgeous glow in just a few hours.I like to use St. Tropez Self Tanning Bronzing Mousse during the winter time when I need a glow. It’s much safer than going to a salon and trust me it does not leave you orange!
Don’t get me wrong, I love tanning and sunny vacations as much as the next girl, but with all this talk of skin diseases I know I need to protect myself from those harmful rays. I would love to know what kind of products you all use when you go on vacation so comment below!
